Gellar Slays Buffy Movie

Conventional wisdom holds that the next season of TV's Buffy the Vampire Slayer, its 7th, will be the last. Unlike the X-Files, the show will be bowing at the height of its powers, leaving fans hungry for a motion picture franchise that creator (and possible demigod) Joss Whedon wants to launch.

But he may have to do it without his star, Sarah Michelle Gellar. While doing press for the upcoming Scooby Doo "movie," she had this to say to Moviehole about her feelings on a Buffy: The Motion Picture:

"You know, I don't (feel committed to a buffy movie). I'm not in to it, and I've got to be honest and say that I believe that, first of all, it was a movie, it didn't work as a film and we battled for so long, just getting out from underneath was essentially a failed feature film and I feel that with the beauty of the story, that the attachment you have and the ride that you take with these characters, and I feel like we make a movie every week. So to take one episode to expand, it's kind of a waste. And I also feel it's kind of a shocking thing for television. I feel like it's saying, well okay, now we move on to bigger things because your moviegoers expect it, but I am the one who is actually, I've always said I don't think it's right to be out and I don't think it's fair. And some times continuing, you know, it's really important for us to go out with a bang. We don't want to be the show that people say, you know, that your show had gotten cancelled two years ago. And I'm not going to say that it's been a weird year to watch shows that came up with us, that were so big, kind of go out with a whimper. Ally McBeal upset us. You know, that was kind of hard for us to say, you know, that is not going to happen to us, if we are going to go, then we're going out with a bang and we're going to walk away saying we did this many years of fabulous television."

This is sad news indeed, but maybe Gellar is just feeling the effects of being in a movie that might make some money. Remember how David Duchovney said he wouldn't return to the X-Files - before he made Evolution?
